Dr CHEONG Koon Hean
Dr Cheong Koon Hean is currently the CEO of the Housing and Development Board (HDB) overseeing the development and management of some 1 million public housing flats in 26 towns/estates. Since joining the HDB in 2010, she has steered the organization towards developing well designed, community centric, sustainable and smart towns and overseen one of the largest building programs by HDB.
Dr Cheong was previously the CEO of the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) from 2004 to 2010, in charge of strategic land use planning, conservation of built heritage, promotion of design excellence and the real estate market. She played a key role in the development of major growth areas, including Marina Bay and the Sino Singapore Tianjin Eco City.
Dr Cheong is currently on the Boards of the HDB, the National University of Singapore, the Civil Service College, as well as the International Federation for Housing and Planning. Active internationally, she served on expert panels convened by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Brookings Institution and is on the World Economic Forum’s Real Estate and Urbanisation Global Agenda Council. She is also a nominating committee member of the Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize.
A Colombo Plan Scholar, Dr Cheong graduated with a first class honours degree and University Gold Medal in Architecture (Newcastle); a Masters in Development Planning (University College London) and has completed the Advanced Management Programme (Harvard). She was conferred the silver, gold and Meritorious Service Medals for outstanding public service, received an honorary doctorate in Architecture as well as the Alumni’s Convocation Medal for Professional Excellence, is a fellow of the Singapore Institute of Architects, awarded the International Women Forum’s ‘Woman Who Make a Difference Award 2011 (Washington DC, USA) and inducted into the SCWO Hall of Fame. She is also the Tan Swan Beng Endowed Professor in Nanyang Technological University.
